NATHPO WORKSHOPS & Informational Webinars on NAGPRA Regulations (DOI Consultation)
The Department of the Interior (DOI) has invited Tribal Leaders and Native Hawaiian Community Leaders to consult on a draft proposal of revisions to its Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) regulations (43 C.F.R. 10) prior to publication. DOI has provided a summary of previous tribal consultation in 2011 upon which the draft revisions were based, and now the National NAGPRA Program has also prepared an overview of changes. Following this Tribal consultation, DOI plans to publish a notice of proposed rulemaking for public comment in October 2021.
NATHPO is holding webinars AND NOW WORKSHOPS by request for THPOs and Tribes on the proposed changes, where you can hear from our Repatriation Advisor what it all really means, ask questions, and get help developing effective comments to ensure that the NAGPRA program and regulations promote Tribal sovereignty and protect ancestors.
